Frogger (フロッガー Furoggā?) is the main and titular protagonist of the Frogger series. He is a quick, agile and determined frog who is always in search for adventure. Despite his courage, however, he has one weakness: a childhood accident where he almost drowned left him deathly afraid of water. He was introduced in the 1981 arcade video game Frogger by Konami, which became an instant hit and saw ports on many gaming consoles and home computers.

Description

Frogger is a green, anthropomorphic frog. Best known as the namesake of the classic 1981 arcade game, he has gone on to star in a series of video games spanning numerous platforms. These games almost always involve hopping around on an invisible grid while avoiding obstacles and battling enemies by using what's available in his environment. Frogger is a registered trademark of Konami.

Personality

Frogger is generally a happy-go-lucky, kind-hearted, brave, and adventurous frog that cares deeply for his friends. He goes to great lengths to keep them tight and never takes his loyalty to them for granted. He occasionally shows a timid side when a good friend is in trouble such as when Lily got abducted in The Rescue or when he himself faces uncertain danger. However, he is too determined to easily give up on pursuing a mission. Once Frogger is suspicious that something is not right, he is quick to get to the bottom of it even if he discovers a more sinister plot along the way.

According to the instruction booklet for Helmet Chaos, the question, "Whoever heard of a frog that doesn't swim?" embarrasses him.

Character design

Over the course of his video game career, Frogger has undergone a series of design changes, some more drastic than the others. Frogger's initial appearance was that of a semi-regular-looking frog, with following titles following a similar design, though sometimes in a more cartoonish way.

Frogger's first major redesign took place in 2001 with the release of Frogger: The Great Quest, where he was given an anthropomorphic design along with an attire that consists of white t-shirt, a brown vest, and blue shorts.

In Frogger's Adventures: The Rescue from 2003, his look changed to a stronger appearance. As defender of Firefly Swamp, his many new adventures took him through many titles taking place in this universe that extended from 2001 to 2005, before a reboot in 2007 with the more kids-oriented title My Frogger: Toy Trials, bringing him back to his original design to some extent.

Another reboot took place in 2011 with the release of Frogger 3D for the Nintendo DS, with following titles usually portraying Frogger with unique designs each, but usually resembling more his original arcade game version.

As one of the more influential characters from the golden era of video games, Frogger has made numerous guest appearances and cameos in various forms of entertainment media, including not only games, but also films and TV series, often reenacting his appearance in the original Frogger arcade game.

Wreck-It Ralph

Frogger makes a cameo appearance along with Dig Dug and the Angel Kids in this film at the Game Central Station, hopping away from Ralph upon seeing him. His iconic 8-bit hopping noise can be heard as he hops away from Ralph.
